This post is not supposed to be funny...two staff people at Evangel were let go last week on the same day. Fired, Retired, Canned, Let Go, We're going in a different direction....etc...yeah you get the Emperor's New Groove idea. One of them is Gilbert Grapes the older guy that worked in the Chapel. The other guy is bearded Bill the trash guy. They said that they can't meet the job description anymore. Basically they fired these guys because they are old....and have been here a long time...and don't move as fast they used to...so they are making a considerable amount...so they get rid of them so they can hire newer/younger people at lower wages that can do more. Which to preface all of this...Evangel has no pension plan...they have a retirement fund...which is basically a big chunk of change you get a lump sum. That is dependant on how much money you have put in over the years...like a savings account...just that Evangel puts in too. So basically they gave these guys a 3 day notice that they would no longer be employed...patted them on the back and kicked their butts out the door. Bill the garbage guy has been working at Evangel for 38 years. He even was here before that moving buildings around when the school was first opening. So yeah...he's been here a long time....and they just stabbed him in the back and said good luck with life! I understand that Evangel is still a business...but I would expect a more "Christian" way to do it like with a year notice or something. I know of a few people in Administration that it may be argued they are not 100% competant in their position...somehow I doubt they will get canned. I guess people with titles are less expendable than people who have given their entire lives to a school....or some garbage like that. God's will is big enough to take care of us even when other people stab us in the backs.....I take comfort in trusting God...however, still doesn't mean you have to agree with wrongness of it all. There's definitely a standard differential between faculty and staff obviously because I remember sitting in a class under a teacher who was in the early stages of alzheimer's disease and had trouble completing a sentence. I paid for that class...but had to teach myself essentially. Let's not fire the old senile guy with a title who can't do his job...but let's get rid of the guy who can do his job just cause he's old and it's a way for us to save some money......who hoo...Go EU! We like that thing you do....
The correct thing to do would be to change the job description...offer a pay cut and then hire a lackey to pick up the slack...that would be one decent way to go. Or give them like a 1/2 year or full year's notice because that way they can make plans.
Just a bit about Bill I learned about him from only like 3 or 4 five min conversations(the guy chances are no body really new except for a few): He removed all of our trash....10-12 TONS of it weekly. He sorted out a lot of pop cans to be recycled. I think he's 72 years old. Been here 38. Served in Korean War....I believe in the Navy...could be wrong though. Good Luck Bill!
I still like Evangel and think it's a good school....but man this bubble could use some readjustment...
