  • I'm not exactly sure where I stand on the whole place of patriotism in the church issue.  For that part I don't even agree with most of the conflicts America has been involved in.  Revolutionay War - over Taxes, French & Spanish wars - Land, Civil War - wasn't even fought over slavery..that was just a by-product of voting issues that would determine economical power influences,  and then there were some other wars I really just don't know all that much about.

However...there is one thing I know for sure...my great grandparents and their generation set down a precedent of honor, integrity, and self sacrifice for thier fellow human beings in WW1 that most don't have a clue about.  Then their children became a legacy with their actions.  Our grandparents (ofcourse there may be some generation differences for some of the readers...adjust the terms as needed) know more about sacrifice than anyone before them and anyone since them.  If you doubt my words just go to the American cemetary in Normandy where close to 10,000 tombstones rest of just Americans who decided to say "NO" to a tyrant who was slaughtering millions upon millions.  And those tombstones are one a small representation of all the men who died from Europe all the way to the Pacific.

Especially as MKs who hold dear to our hearts the places we grew up...it's because of their sacrifice that the nationals and friends we cherished don't live under murdering tyrants having to speak either German or Japanese.  The gospel is being spread and preached and millions upon millions lives are being saved because their arn't atheisitic governments controlling half the world.

If nothing else for one Sunday a year (1 out of 52) we pay homage to that generation as a body of believers since we don't really do it as a body of believers at any other point in the year.

Heck...even the French in Normandy fly American flags for a few days a year.

(It would be nice if bad people could be stopped with hugs and roses...however...just like our police realize...that is not a reality and has not been a reality since the times of Moses and before.)

  • I have no problem honoring the troops. I think that all they do for us is amazing.

I know that I am less of a patriot, because I would much rather be in the Philippines right now. Believe it or not, one of my favorite places in the Philippines is the American Cemetary, which I don't know exactly how large it is, but I'm pretty sure it is more than 10000.

The thing that makes me uncomfortable is that the sanctuary is a house of worship--Worship to God. The way that we honor the troops on patriotic-Sunday is much more passionate than the way we honor God. I am not upset or offended that we honor the troops, but I am very upset when we honor them more than we honor God.

I know that I need to have an attitude change. I know that, whether I like it or not, America is a great country, probably even better than the Philippines. The existence of freedom is a huge philosophical question, but if it exists, then America is one of the most free places around. I know all of those things, but even with that knowledge, I just can't let go of Home.

  • I basically agree with you, except for one point..." The gospel is being spread and preached and millions upon millions lives are being saved because their arn't atheisitic governments controlling half the world."   The gospel is being preached because God wants it to be.  If every government in the world were atheistic, this would not stop.  It might even accelerate.  Look at China, Vietnam, India.  "The blood of the martyrs is the seed of the church."  Maybe even more dangerous than an oppressive government is the numbing comfort of our nation founded on so-called Christian morals.  Just something to think about.
(I just kind of wandered into your site, by the way.  Just visiting:)

  • well...yeah...everything that is accomplished for God is because of what He does...that was kinda assumed on my part....People in Church....Pastors....etc etc....the only reason anyone hears the gospel from them is because God reaches them...God doesn't "need" us...he only asks us to be obedient to the call....if we fail to respond then God will simply use someone else...etc etc  God will work His will in spite of people and situations in the world....sometimes God will even use people and situations (like Pharoh) to accomplish His will.  We can not always understand how God works...we just must have faith that He does...etc etc....
